In 1987, Ryu (Andrew Koji) wins the first World Warrior tournament using the Dark Hadou, a power that draws the demon Akuma (Roman Reigns), who kills Ryu's mentor to bring it out again. Ryu splits from his adoptive brother Ken (Noah Centineo) and vanishes. Six years later, dictator M. Bison (David Dastmalchian) throws a second tournament just to drag him out of hiding. Undercover Interpol agent Chun-Li (Callina Liang), out to make Bison pay for her father's murder, recruits Ryu, Ken and fighters from around the world, and Akuma vows to destroy the winner unless Ryu enters. Two brothers, one demon, one dictator, a whole arcade in between.
Anyone who can do a Shoryuken on a real controller. Bring quarters.
Critics gave Street Fighter a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 44 on Metacritic, and somebody needs to remind them it’s a Street Fighter movie. The smartest move here is the animated scenes. Every time a fighter’s backstory matters, a quick animated stretch fills you in, so Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li make sense instantly, even if you never touched an arcade stick. This isn’t just for the diehards. The catch: the fighting barely stops for two hours, so the story rarely gets room to breathe. But those fights are shot clean and hit hard, nothing like the old cheesy kung fu movies where you can see the punch miss by a foot. And it’s not playing like a one-off. The whole thing is built as round one of a franchise, and it isn’t shy about it. A 7.6 because it makes a video game movie easy for anyone to follow and keeps the action sharp. $1,263 says you’re humming the Guile theme before the credits finish.
What works: The animated backstory scenes make every fighter make sense right away, and the nonstop fights are shot clean instead of cheesy.
What doesn’t: The fighting almost never stops, so the story rarely gets room to breathe between rounds.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a video game movie they can follow without ever playing the game, plus the fans who played it to death.
The ending clearly sets up a sequel, so this plays as chapter one of a Street Fighter franchise, not a live-action one-off.
